Finished Encyclopedia Blazertannica and was left feeling grateful for the fine work of Michael Davies and Roger Bennett. There was wit and insight and backstory and product placement. Everything suboptimally optimal. I especially liked the entry for “Regret,” in which Rog wrote about failing to get a picture taken with one of his heroes, Walter Payton. It made me think of the time that I met Payton at a trading card convention in the late ’90s. He signed a card for me and told me to hug my mother, and that he’d be watching. I went over and hugged her, and he smiled and nodded at me as I looked back at him. Classy guy. Lots of great memories emerged from reading. A wonderful account of football and what makes football great.
